Juan José del Coz Díaz

FULL PROFESSOR

Full Professor in the field of Construction Engineering at the University of Oviedo, where he has been Full Professor since 2012 and is currently a senior member of the GICONSIME research group.

He holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from UNED (1991) and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oviedo. His doctoral thesis, Técnicas experimentales y métodos numéricos aplicados a la determinación de los parámetros de fractura dinámica  (1995). Supervised by Prof. Alfonso Carlos Fernández Canteli.

The academic career is complemented by extensive professional experience in industry, including leading roles in engineering and project management prior to joining the university.

Research activity focuses on numerical modelling and simulation applied to construction and industrial engineering, particularly using finite element methods (FEM). Main areas include structural analysis, lightweight concrete, composite materials, building energy performance, thermal and acoustic behaviour, and optimisation techniques.

This work has resulted in a highly consolidated research profile, with more than 120 publications in international journals and strong involvement in technology transfer. Participation in numerous competitive research projects—many as principal investigator—has been combined with the leadership of multiple research contracts with industry addressing real engineering challenges in structural design, sustainable construction, and advanced materials.

The activity is also reflected in a significant number of patents and utility models related to construction systems and materials, together with long-standing collaboration with industry and public institutions.

Within GICONSIME, contributions focus on sustainable and industrialised construction systems, including advanced building envelopes, lightweight materials, and energy-efficient solutions, in both national and international projects.
